How To Stay Motivated In The Gym

How To Stay Motivated In The Gym

At one time or another, we find ourselves making excuses of why we can’t get into the gym. I definitely know I have! But how do we stay motivated in the gym when our schedules and our lives get in the way of that happening? We are all busy adults and we have work, family, and school to juggle. Now we have to add a workout into that equation! How do we really stick with our New Year’s resolutions or our personal fitness goals?

It begins…

Around New Year’s Eve is when most people decide that they want to change and get back in shape. With Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years all in a row month after month. No wonder we feel so terrible and out of shape afterwards. But how many of those people who decide to make a change after the holidays actually stick with it? Not very many. Why does it have to be New Year’s that is the magic day that everyone chooses to make the change? Why not now? None of us are getting any younger so we need to take advantage of where we are now. If we let another few months pass, those months will turn into years! We have to start now.

You might be looking at yourself in a mirror already bringing yourself down and telling yourself how you can’t do it. Maybe you don’t know where to start. Maybe you have a lot of weight to lose or maybe you have a little. Maybe you have to gain weight because you don’t like how you look. As a personal trainer with over seven years of experience in the industry, I know almost every excuse out there. You know what I see when I see someone coming to me for help? I see potential. So what if you have a lot of weight to lose! I see that as a blank canvas and you are the artist. You must understand that all of us only have one body in this lifetime. You must love yourself because it’s the only body you get! But if you do decide to make a change and stay on it, there are a few things you need to know.

The Blueprint to Life

You must understand that there are no shortcuts into getting healthier or getting in shape. Only work will get your body to where you want it to be. And in order to put in the work, you also have to make some sacrifices. Now these sacrifices aren’t something major or something that you will lose a lot of happiness or satisfaction with. By simply progressively adjusting, you won’t notice these small road bumps in your path to get to where you want to go. Most people would rather pay hundreds to thousands of dollars out of their pocket for expensive liposuction or some other fancy treatment that claims to get rid of body fat fast. But here is the disclaimer that most of these companies will give you. “Results may vary.” If you look at your body from a scientific perspective, no matter how much we exercise or how much we diet, our fat cells never disappear. Now I know what your thinking. How does that make sense when people get six pack abs or toned physiques? Well to answer that question, you must understand that fat cells have the ability to expand or contract. You probably have known someone or heard of someone who has lost a lot of weight only to gain it all back and then some. Right? That’s because their fat cells shrink but they don’t go away. Fat takes up twice the amount of space in the body as muscle of the same amount. For example, five pounds of fat and five pounds of muscle don’t look identical at all even though they weigh the same.

So follow my advice and stop looking at the scale to judge your results! The way you can tell if you are heading in the right direction is by how you feel and by looking in the mirror. If your clothes are fitting looser and people are noticing your body change, even though you may not see it, you are getting there.

You also need to understand that this is going to take time. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will your body. You must treat your body like it is your temple. Because this is the only body you are given in this lifetime. You have to mold it into what you want it to be. You are the creator and your body is the slab of clay. At the end of your life, are you going to sculpt a masterpiece or are you going to create an abomination? Take your time with your weight loss goals. Make sure every step is calculated and tested. Experiment with different training routines and diets. Find what works for you and forget what everyone else is saying. Start off slow and gradually get more and more serious. Maybe take a walk every other day with your family, friend, or significant other. Then once you start getting into the habit, maybe throw a few push ups, pull ups, squats, and sit ups here and there. Then continue working your way up until you are a fit freak.

Now that you have gotten started on your new path to a healthy lifestyle, it’s time to kick it up a notch! Remember that your body is your masterpiece. It’s your baby! You should feed it as such. Find foods that you love and find appealing and slowly tweak the recipe to make it healthier. Maybe you like a nice juicy and fattening burger. Instead of buying a burger off the dollar menu at McDonald’s, take the time to make your own. You should be enjoying this time. It shouldn’t at all feel like a chore. Cooking is one of the most relaxing things that anyone can do in this world. The problem is is most people are eating foods they don’t like! Well with a little creativity and a little tweaking, you can turn an unappetizing burger into one of the most delicious homemade burgers out there. Maybe even better then Gordon Ramsay! But what if you don’t like to cook? Well, you can make it into a fun activity. Whether you are single, have a significant other, or have a family, spend some time really having fun. Use it at a date night idea and create new delicious creations together. So you can potentially turn a need that your body requires into a romantic activity.

The point I’m trying to put across is that most people focus on the negative aspects of fitness. They believe you have to suffer in order to look good and that just isn’t true! You should enjoy every second and every moment of your journey. Are you going to hit some road bumps here and there? Yes you are. I’m not going to lie about that. But people who struggle to lose the weight are looking at it the wrong way. It should be enjoyable and it should be taken nice and slow. Don’t rush into it thinking that you are going to lose X amount of weight in X weeks or X months. Enjoy the journey. Take your time and eventually everything will fall into place. Create your own masterpiece and help others create their own masterpiece. We are all brothers and sisters in iron. Are you going to let the weight crush you? Or are you going to crush the weight? Take control of your life and stare challenge directly in the face. Don’t be afraid. Continue on your path and it will keep unfolding for you.

The great thing about fitness is that you don’t necessarily have to know everything all at once! It’s a learning curve. You try some things and it may work, it may not. But by experimenting, you will find the method to the madness. In time you will find ways in order to deal with your current situation and develop a game plan to get to where you want to go. BodyByBoyle is a great resource that I use and that has helped me develop the tools in my arsenal as a personal trainer. It has helped me understand different ways to hit a certain muscle in the gym or the different ways food impacts your body. It has given me an insight into other training methods so that I not only have a body that looks the part, but that also functional as well. Why spend thousands of dollars hiring a personal trainer when you can get the information they have! No one knows your body better than you do. So find out what gets you going and what works for you. You have so much potential in you that you don’t even realize you have. Let it out and show the world what you can do!
