The Ketogenic Diet – Fact or Fiction?

The Ketogenic Diet – Fact or Fiction?

The Misunderstanding

When the new year rolls around, most people have the New Year’s Resolution to get back in shape. The problem that they have is that once they go to the gym for a few days to a week or two, they give up because their diet or workout regimen is too hard to continue long term. So they give up and they go back to their original habits. When I tell people what the Ketogenic diet is and what it involves, they look at me like I’m crazy.

Breakdown

The Ketogenic diet is a diet high in fat, low in carbs, and moderate in protein. Many people think that a diet high in fat increases your risk of heart disease or that you’ll have a heart attack but they could not be further from the truth. By eating a higher amount of fat and reducing the amount of carbohydrate you eat, you will actually have more energy then you would if you ate carbs in every meal. The reason for this is that fat is slowly digested meaning a longer prolonged period of energy versus that of carbohydrate which is quickly digested and absorbed which give you energy spikes because of the release of insulin in the bloodstream. Take for example, during Thanksgiving, there is corn, stuffing, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, gravy, and anything else that contains carbohydrates, If you eat those foods, eventually you will start feeling sleepy. Many people believe that that is from an amino acid in turkey called Tryptophan that makes them feel sleepy but it isn’t. The sleepy feeling is from the breakdown, absorption, and release of insulin.

What Happens in the Body?

There have been several scientific studies done on the effects of the ketogenic diet versus the low fat diet. Most doctors now are realizing the positive effects of the ketogenic diet especially with patients with diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that is classified as the inability to produce or release insulin because of the increased demand it puts on your body from ingesting carbohydrate. As we eat carbohydrate, it is broken down into glucose in the body. After it is broken down, insulin is released and acts as a transporter through the bloodstream and carries the glucose into muscle or fat cells for use and storage. The average individual takes in more glucose then is required to be burned, so the remainder is stored as fat. But as there is more and more carbohydrates coming into the body, it puts stress on your system and slows down the release of insulin until it stops releasing insulin completely. That is the reason that people with Type II Diabetes will need to take blood tests and take insulin shots. In the past, doctors told their diabetes patients to go on a diet and typically this diet was low fat, not low carb that was necessary. But with the new releases of these studies that point out that high fat low carb diets are beneficial, doctors are now turning to the keto diet for their patients. As your glucose stores in your body are depleted by eating a low carb diet, eventually your body releases ketones. Ketones are composed of three ketone bodies: Acetone, Acetoacetate, and Hydroxybutyrate. These three ketones are released and utilized as energy from your fat stores. Unlike a typical diet that only burns glucose but keeps the fat stores. This is the way the keto diet can help you keep it off. Typically the keto diet is composed of 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs.

Ketogenic Lifestyle

I started doing the ketogenic diet in December of 2016 and I have to admit that starting off, it was pretty hard. You have to understand that your body has ran on carbohydrates your entire life and now you are giving it a new fuel source. But after a few weeks, my body has grown accustomed to the higher fat. Not only that but I enjoy the foods that I eat. What other diet will allow you to eat eggs and bacon and a nice fatty steak? I have dropped over 30 pounds and I feel great! Not only does it allow me to keep the weight off, but if I have a craving for something with carbs, it won’t throw off my progress. It will allow me to start off where I left off at the same weight and body fat. You would be surprised on the recipes and ingredients that you can use on this diet and it is actually enjoyable. I was able to still eat foods that normally contain carbohydrates but by altering the ingredients, I am still able to eat them. You can make your own low carb pizza crust, low carb lasagna, low carb burgers, or anything else that you crave. Simply by changing the ingredients used, you’ll be able to enjoy all the foods that you like and still be able to drop the pounds.
